Bio
Becky Gebhardt is a musician and non-profit organizer motivated by collaborative art-making, community-building, and the transformational power of music. Recent projects include composing for Sundance ‘22 award-winning documentary “Framing Agnes,” and collaborating with Raining Jane and Jason Mraz on Mraz’s 2023 album Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride.
Becky’s relationship with music began in the 80’s with piano lessons and a fascination with tape recorders. In the mid-90’s she obsessed over alt rock and taught herself bass and guitar so she could jam with her friends and be in bands. Meanwhile her older brother became a hip-hop DJ and crate digger - rounding out her references and influences. In 1999, while at UCLA and not majoring in music, she met her life-long band mates: Mai Bloomfield, Mona Tavakoli, and Chaska Potter, and joined Raining Jane. It’s at that time that she learned to play the sitar with the North Indian Classical music legend Shujaat Khan. Later on she studied sitar with Paul Livingstone.
A fiercely independent band, Raining Jane has released four albums and spent six years playing over 120 shows per year across the U.S. In 2006, Raining Jane opened for Jason Mraz at Redlands University. Mraz watched their set and later invited the band to jam on his demos. Raining Jane and Mraz have been writing, recording, and touring together ever since.
Throughout their many years of collaboration, Raining Jane and Jason Mraz have built an ever-growing catalog of co-written songs. Raining Jane co-wrote Certified Platinum hit “Have It All” in 2018, fan favorite “Beautiful Mess” in 2008, lead single “Love Someone” in 2014 from the Mraz-Raining Jane full-length album YES!, and lead single “Look For The Good” from 2020 to name a few. In 2023, the stars aligned again to make another full-length album together. Mraz released his eighth album, Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride, on June 23rd, 2023. Becky can be heard on the bass and sitar throughout the album.
Touring with Raining Jane and Jason Mraz has taken Becky across the globe multiple times and onto many prestigious stages including Royal Albert Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, Red Rocks, and many others. The group has appeared on television shows American Idol, The Ellen Show, The Tonight Show, The Today Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!
In her hometown of Los Angeles Becky co-founded social justice and music education non-profit Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles with Raining Jane, creating music-making opportunities for girls and gender expansive youth since 2010.
Becky also composes for film and video projects including the documentary Framing Agnes which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and won both the NEXT Innovator Award, and NEXT Audience Award.
